How to Get a PumpSaver for a Water Well

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on May 26, 2021 by JimMay 26, 2021
photo of The PumpSaver as part of the Solar Rainwater System

With summer on the way, and an end to our rainy season approaching, I am reminded of the dry summer last year and concerns about the water table here at the ranch. Fortunately, our water well performed during the last year’s drought, but a number of our neighbors had trouble with their wells. Some troubles were resolved by a visit from the well-service company and a replacement part of two, but at least one well’s water level was low — resulting in low or no water output.

Farming Bluebonnets is Easy

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on November 6, 2019 by JimDecember 2, 2019
photo of Our backyard filled with Bluebonnets

For the last ten years, we’ve been farming bluebonnets (Lupinus texensis) around the place. It started when I planted a few seeds and gradually, they’ve bloomed and spread. Because I’m impatient, I also helped them along by mowing the plants after they had gone to seed and spreading the clippings to other parts of the ranch.

Buying A Great Massey Ferguson 65

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on November 6, 2019 by JimDecember 2, 2019
photo of The Massey Ferguson Model 65

A Massey Ferguson 65 is nice to have. Over the years, I’ve learned that a tractor is essential. The point was made in about 2002 when I decided to buy a truckload of decomposed granite to improve the driveway. After spreading 10 yards of material with a wheelbarrow and shovel, I realized there had to be a better way.

Solar Powered Rainwater Project – Completed?

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on November 15, 2017 by JimNovember 15, 2017
photo of Completed Solar Powered Rainwater System

The Solar Powered Rainwater Project began about eight months ago, although one might argue it is the culmination of my rainwater system dreams beginning in 2002.

Solar Power Rainwater System – More Panels!

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on November 14, 2017 by JimNovember 15, 2017
photo of A solar-powered water shed

The solar-powered rainwater system was complete — except for more panels, and a cable to isolate the rainwater power from the rest of the system. Construction on the rainwater system began in 2002, when I trenched the various wires and pipes into the ground. I needed power for the rainwater system, and tapped into an underground wire originally intended to supply power to the well.

Solar Powered Rainwater Project – Final Assembly

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on July 15, 2017 by JimNovember 14, 2017
photo of the entire solar system

With all the parts in stock, it was time to assemble the whole Solar Powered Rainwater Project. I cleaned out a space in the garden shed, and added plywood to the wall for attaching the various components. We would be mounting the inverter/charge controller, solar panel combiner/breakers, A/C transfer switch and related wiring.

Solar Powered Rainwater Project – Batteries

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on July 11, 2017 by JimJuly 15, 2017
photo of Battery cart with batteries

You may recall from an earlier post that the Solar Powered Rainwater Project requires substantial battery storage. In our original calculations, we decided we would need 15,796 watt/hours of storage to provide three days of autonomy (or days without sun).

Major equipment purchase done, it’s time to think about the installation. The solar panels will be arriving in a day or two, and I plan to install them right away. Solar panels produce maximum power when the sun is perpendicular to … Continue reading →

Solar Powered Rainwater Project – to Grid-Tie, or not to Grid-Tie. (that is the question)

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on March 22, 2017 by JimJuly 14, 2017

Previously, we discussed the amount of power needed, and how that determines the size of the solar array. We also mentioned Days of Autonomy and how that informs battery storage. Now for Charge Controllers and Inverters — the brains that tie everything together. … Continue reading →

Solar Powered Rainwater Project – Panels, Batteries and Inverters — Oh My!

Roy Creek Ranch Posted on March 21, 2017 by JimJuly 14, 2017
photo of Well House and Garden Shed

In a previous Project post, we determined our power needs – 1300 watt-hours per day to pump water. Now we can calculate the battery bank capacity,  solar panel wattage, and inverter capacity needed for our installation. Let’s start with the panel … Continue reading →
